What makes it difficult for couples who originally loved each other so deeply to maintain affectionate, unguarded relationships with one another as the years go by?  Modern couples face profound challenges in maintaining emotional and sexual intimacy.  As professionals, we need empathy, wisdom, energy, specialized knowledge - and sometimes courage - to help couples distressed by their disconnection.  Using lecture, case studies and group discussions, this presentation will take a deep look at the biological, societal and intrapsychic forces that make staying in connection so difficult.  You will come away with some new ideas, new models, and new interventions to help.

Upon completion of this event, participants will:

1. Be able to discuss Dr. Helen Fisher's research on the natural history of lustful, erotic love and desire and explain why it is important that couples understand Fisher's findings in order to have realistic expectations of how they will feel desire in their relationship process.

2.  Be able to explain a simple recipe for emotional intimacy that will help couples immediately assess whether a particular interaction promotes their emotional intimacy or not.

3. Be able to recite what ACES are (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and discuss how the combined partners' ACE scores are likely to predict marital conflict and sexual difficulties.

4.  Be able to describe why early Milestones of Sexual Development (Zoldbrod, 1998) are so critical in couples' ability to anticipate that as sexual interlude will be reliably pleasurable.

Aline Zoldbrod, Ph.D., is an AASECT certified sex therapist (since 1996) and the author of three commercially published books on sexuality and intimacy. Her 1998 book, SexSmart, is an award winning book recommended by top sexual experts. She developed the interpersonal theory of sexual development, The Milestones of Sexual Development, and blogs at Newsmax.com.
