What is group therapy and how can it benefit your practice? It may surprise you to learn that group therapy has been shown to be as effective as individual therapy for a number of psychological disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and social phobia. Group therapy helps people learn about themselves and improve their interpersonal relationships. In an increasingly isolated society, group treatment helps people learn to connect and address loneliness. Group therapy offers an affordable treatment option and partners well with individual therapy.

Dr. Eleanor Counselman, current President of the American Group Psychotherapy Association, and Dr. Steffen Fuller, current President of the Northeastern Society for Group Psychotherapy, will talk about this special form of therapy and how offering group therapy as part of their practice has benefited their clients.

Some of the topics to be covered are:

  • What happens in a therapy group?
  • How do I decide if a client is appropriate for group?
  • How do I introduce the idea of group to a client?
  • What kind of group therapy should I consider?
  • What training is necessary to become a group therapist?
