About this Workshop

Sex and love are healthy, vital aspects of life. However, at times, sexual behaviors can become compulsive and self-defeating when someone

  • spends increasing amounts of time engaging in problematic sexual behaviors,
  • engages in increasingly risky sexual behaviors
  • continues these behaviors despite negative medical, legal, relationship, financial and other consequences,
  • cannot stop self-destructive sexual behaviors despite repeated efforts to do so
  • continues to engage in these behaviors despite receiving treatment for relationship problems, drug and alcohol addiction, childhood trauma,

mood disorders or other psychiatric conditions

For clients with these symptoms, specialized treatment for sexual addiction may be necessary in addition to other therapeutic interventions. Preliminary research indicates that sexual addiction causes changes in the brain that are similar to changes in neuro-pathways that occur as a result of other addictions. Sexual addiction has increased exponentially in recent years, especially with the increasing ease of access to sexual content through the Internet.

In this workshop, Dr. Ziff will provide an overview of the diagnosis and treatment of sex addiction. Participants will learn to use a simple, six-question, validated screening protocol, known as PATHOS, used for assessment of sex addiction. They will also be introduced to the task-based model for treatment of sex addiction developed by Dr. Patrick Carnes. Dr. Ziff will also provide information on resources for evaluation and treatment of sex addiction, as well as informational handouts for clients.
