Congratulations to MPA member and fellow Jessica Henderson Daniel, Ph.D., ABPP, on her election to the position of president of the American Psychological Association for 2018. She will become president-elect effective January, 2017.

The MPA Board of Directors endorsed Dr. Daniel for president of APA prior to the start of the voting period in September, citing her work as a psychologist in Massachusetts and her distinguished career as a mentor, policy advisor, advocate, teacher, researcher, and author. In MPA's endorsement message, President Dawn Cisewski, Psy.D. said, "We believe that Dr. Daniel will be a dynamic representative of all psychologists as president of APA."

Dr. Daniel outlined her goals as APA president in her candidate statement saying, "I want to focus on leadership and collaboration as citizen psychologists within our discipline and across our local, state and national networks. Through leadership and collaborations, we can make our power for positive change more apparent in the public's mind. We need to move beyond a narrow professional focus to engage other disciplines and interest groups."

Dr. Daniel has served in many governance roles with MPA and APA divisions and committees for over 30 years.

She served on the MPA Board of Directors from 1994-1997. She also served, from 1995 to 1997, as Chair of the New Psychologists (Early Career) Initiative, the first such program of its kind. Dr. Daniel was a recipient of MPA's Ezra Saul Psychological Service Award in 1993 and the Kenneth D. Herman, Ph.D., J.D. Career Contribution Award in 2004.

Dr. Daniel was the first African-American elected to an at-large seat on the APA Board of Directors. She has held several leadership roles at APA, including president of the Society for the Psychology of Women (Div. 35) and as a member of the Committee for the Advancement of Professional Practice (the Practice Directorate management committee), the Council of Representatives (chairing the Women's Caucus, the Public Interest Caucus, and the Education and Training Caucus), the Ethics Code Task Force and the APA Finance Committee. She also served as the senior member of the Early Career Psychologist Task Force and chaired the APA Presidential Centering on Mentoring Task Force.

Dr. Daniel also served on the Massachusetts Board of Registration, as a member from 1984 -1989, and as chair from 1989 -1993.

Dr. Daniel is currently director of training in psychology in the department of psychiatry and associate director of Leadership Education in Adolescent Health Training Program (LEAH) in the Division of Adolescent Medicine, and is a consulting psychologist on their Child Protection Team at Boston Children's Hospital.

Please join us in offering Dr. Jessica Henderson Daniel our sincere best wishes for success in her new role as president of APA.
