A Message of Sincere Thanks: Brian Doherty to Resign as Executive Director

Dear MPA Members,

After three years as Executive Director of MPA, I have made the difficult decision to resign to pursue a new challenge and opportunity. I have truly enjoyed working at MPA, and a strong part of me wishes I could stay, but I was presented with an opportunity that I couldn't pass up. I am pleased to have accepted the position of President and CEO of the Massachusetts Assisted Living Association. June 8 will be my last day at MPA. I am proud of what we have accomplished for psychology and the public, and I am grateful for your dedication to the organization. It has been a rewarding experience to work with so many passionate and dedicated people to improve MPA and, as our mission states, "advance psychology as a means of promoting human welfare."

As I look ahead to my departure from MPA I am energized to reflect on the momentum MPA has sustained in many areas, which I am confident will continue. We have implemented many aspects of our strategic plan, many of which are not yet visible to members at large, but suffice it to say that the organization has been working towards achieving greater efficiency, inclusivity, and productivity. We have convinced health plans to adopt more favorable policies for psychologists and consumers, and other positive changes are on the horizon. MPA's top legislative priority, the anti-clawback bill, has advanced this year and for the first time, has a chance to be approved. The bill to deter ghost networks and require health plans to maintain accurate provider networks and the nursing orders bill have advanced and may pass this year as well. Our recent and upcoming workshops and events are interesting and engaging. Above all, I am most proud of how MPA has improved communications with its members. When I first arrived at MPA I was impressed to learn of the work being done and progress being made by numerous committees and work groups. So many of its members, staff, and consultants were doing extraordinary work for the organization yet much of the work was hidden from members. Our earliest initiative and greatest accomplishment was to be able to improve communications and broadcast the various facets of the organization to its members. I hope the organization will continue to shine a light on these activities and the hard-working psychologists who devote their time to the organization and its mission.

I have full confidence that President Dawn Cisewski PsyD, President-Elect Maggie Lanca PhD, the Board of Directors, and the MPA staff and consultants will continue their diligent and thoughtful work on your behalf. I would like to especially thank the MPA staff and consultants for their considerable efforts. I offer my sincere thanks to the MPA staff: Lynne Casey, Jennifer Warkentin PhD, and Shelly Schweizer. My sincere thanks go to MPA's consultants: lobbyists Patricia Lynch JD and Ben Fierro JD, bookkeeper Elizabeth Wirth CPA, and past legal counsel Eric Harris EdD JD. I also offer my sincere thanks and gratitude to the members of MPA's Board of Directors who have served on the board during the past three years, as they have been remarkably supportive, thoughtful, clear-eyed, and forward-thinking.

I hope to have the opportunity to connect with many of you in the coming weeks, and I promise to be a friend and resource to you and MPA in the years ahead.

I look forward to assisting in a smooth and successful transition. The Board of Directors has already met and taken steps to put a transition plan into place, and President Cisewski will have updates for you on that very soon.

With warm and sincere thanks to you and everyone at MPA,

Brian Doherty
MPA Executive Director
