Announcement

2019 Ethnic Minority Leadership Development Workshop

The Office on Ethnic Minority Affairs and Division 31, the Division of State, Provincial, and Territorial Psychological Association Affairs are co-sponsoring the 2019 ethnic minority leadership development/training workshop with the goal of assisting Diversity Delegates to advance into leadership positions within their respective State, Provincial, or Territorial Association (SPTA).  The workshop will occur the afternoon prior to (March 8th) and in the morning before (March 9th) the official start of the 2019 Practice Leadership Conference.  The past workshops were highly successful, and numerous participants have moved on to leadership and governance positions within their SPTA and APA.

The workshop will be organized and facilitated by prominent psychologists with leadership and governance experience.  They have a great appreciation and understanding of the challenges that psychologists of color face in becoming leaders within SPTAs and APA.  The facilitators are:

Jessica Henderson-Daniel, PhD

Dinelia Rosa, PhD

Sandra Shullman, PhD

Melba Vasquez, PhD

Cathy McDaniels-Wilson, PhD

The goals of the leadership development workshop are to:

1.         Explore leadership styles and impact of behavioral style on others

2.         Provide knowledge/information needed to facilitate movement into leadership positions   within the SPTA

3.         Address readiness/confidence in moving into leadership positions

4.         Address the manner in which being a minority fits into this context

Up to twelve (12) individuals will be selected for the Leadership Training workshop.

The Leadership Training is completely separate from the Practice Leadership Conference which all Diversity Delegates (APA & SPTA-funded) will attend.  If you are also applying to be funded as a Diversity Delegate to attend PLC you may still apply to attend the Leadership Training workshop.  Please take note of the following:

•          If you are selected to be a Diversity Delegate, Division 31 will cover the hotel expense for one night and meals for the day of the workshop.

•          If you are not selected to be a Diversity Delegate, you may still attend the workshop and Division 31 will cover your hotel expense the night prior to the workshop and meals the day of the workshop but you or your SPTA will need to cover your flight to and from Washington, D.C.

•          If your SPTA is funding you as a Diversity Delegate to attend PLC and you are selected to participate in the Leadership Training workshop, Division 31 will cover one hotel night and meals the day of the workshop.

•          Your acceptance into the Leadership Training Workshop is independent of your funding as a Diversity Delegate at PLC.

Preference will be given to those individuals interested in moving into SPTA governance who have not yet held a high-level elected office in their SPTA.

The selection committee will consist of Dr. Jennifer Kelly, Dr. Dinelia Rosa, Diversity Committee Chair for Division 31, Jo Linder-Crow, Ph.D., Chair of the Council of Executives of State & Provincial Psychological Associations (CESPPA), Drs. Travis Colwell & Theresa Coddington, Co-Chairs of the Committee of State Leaders, and Dr. Dan Abrahamson, Associate Executive Director of State Advocacy in the Practice Directorate.
