As a result of the organized advocacy efforts by a wide range of provider, hospital, and consumer groups, the Senate voted YES on Budget Amendment #798, a critical increase to the Department of Mental Health (DMH) Rental Subsidy Program.

Amendment #798 would amend the budget to include an additional $1 million to the DMH Rental Subsidy Program. This funding would help approximately 80 additional DMH clients who are homeless, unstably housed, or stuck in inpatient settings to secure stable, affordable housing. Click here to learn more about the amendment, it's impact on clients, and the wide range of supporting organizations.

It's important to thank our Senators for making the needs of people with behavioral health conditions and their families a top priority.

Please take a minute and thank your Senator for voting YES on Amendment #798 to increase housing opportunities for DMH clients. Click here to look up your State Senator's name and contact information. Please also take a minute and thank Senator Cyr for filing the amendment and for his leadership: julian.cyr@masenate.gov and (617) 722-1570.

When reaching out, phone calls to your Senator's office have the most impact, but faxes and emails still help. Here are some tips on what to say/write:

-   Let the person know that you are a constituent (meaning you live in that person's district)
-  You are expressing your appreciation for his/her/their support of Senate Budget Amendment
#798, Eliminate Waiting List for DMH Rental Subsidy Program
-   If you like, you can add a comment about how this issue impacts your personal life, work, clients, etc.

NEXT STEPS: The budget will go to the Conference Committee. The House included an additional $500,000 to the DMH Rental Subsidy Program, while the Senate added $1 million. The Conference Committee will negotiate a final amount based on these numbers. Once the Conference Committee members have been appointed, we'll update members on how to continue advocating for this important issue.
